The 2006/7
Project
The club president for the year,
Richard Pither supported by club
member John Baines travelled to
Zambia
with Village Water in July
2006 for a fact finding mission in the
Western
Province
.
Village Water are a
UK
based charity working only in the
Western
Province
where they run a programme of well building for
rural villages.
The wells are hand dug and equipped with a robust hand pump.
To qualify for assistance each village has to undergo a Health and
Sanitary course and then form a Village Water Committee to take
over ownership and management of the completed well.
The Diss club agreed to support Village Water and other clubs in
District 1080 have also sponsored wells.
Matching Grants have been
obtained from District and from The Rotary Foundation.
This has
resulted in funding for 12 wells constructed during the dry season
of 2007 (June to November) all of which are being visited during a
field trip by a District delegation of 6 Rotarians.
