The Mere Fountain

The new floating fountain on Diss Mere was provided by Diss & District Rotary Club and its generous
sponsors to celebrate 100 years of Rotary and the long association between the Rotary Club and Diss town,
which goes back to 1947.

The fountain was handed over to the town council during a ‘Proms in the Park’ evening held on the
25th of June 2005
.  This event was attended by Stewart White of BBC Look East and several other
local dignitaries, including the town mayors of Diss and Eye.
The South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band provided the music, which included favourites from the
shows and from the last night of the Proms.

The fountain adds to the natural beauty of the Mere and its park, providing an eye-catching focal point,
which compliments other improvements that are planned or have been made around the park.
It supports three separate nozzles, which can be changed to vary the pattern and height of the spray.
In addition, it is capable of being lit up at night with several colour-change combinations to provide
an additional spectacle or to highlight special occasions.

Significantly, the spray aerates the water to improve the water quality for the resident wildlife,
especially the fish. The fish are expected to congregate in the oxygen-rich water around the
fountain during summer months when oxygen levels have historically been depleted and the
water has been most polluted.

Major generous sponsors made this project a success, as named on
The Commemorative Stone
